Depth of Field

On this page you can see how the aperture size of the lens affects the depth of field of a photograph.

In our photo here the flower is in focus as well as the branches around it.  Shot with a 105mm Lens with an aperture set at f /8.0

In our next photo is the same scene shot with a 105mm lens
but with an aperture set at f / 2.8.  You can see the wider aperture narrows the depth of field, thus
drawing the viewers eye to the flower in the centre.

This shot of a frozen model was shot with a 70mm lens.  A fairly wide aperture - f /4.0 - was used, blurring out the background but keeping the depth of field just right to keep the whole face in focus.

Below here another shot, "Getting Ready for the Concert".  This shot was taken with a 135mm lens with an aperture of F / 7.1 Although the lens was stronger than the one used above, thus narrowing the depth of field, the smaller aperture of F / 7 made the depth of field a little wider.  If shot at F / 4 the background would have been more out of focus.

On the last photo the cat was shot with a 70mm lens with an aperture of f / 2.8 .  If a smaller aperture was used the cats ears would have been in focus too
